How the USS Batfish Has Moved Across Muskogee

How the USS Batfish Has Moved Across Muskogee

The USS Batfish, a World War II-era submarine, has a remarkable history. And not just for its contributions during the war, but for its unique journey to land right here in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Originally commissioned in 1943, this Balao-class submarine was responsible for sinking several enemy vessels during its time in the Pacific. After serving for decades, the Batfish was retired and became a historical monument in Muskogee.

In 1972, the Batfish was brought to Muskogee to serve as a memorial at the Oklahoma Naval Combat Memorial Park. But the journey wasn’t as easy as your road trip here will be.

The Batfish, weighing in at an impressive 1,400 tons and measuring 311 feet in length, had to be transported over land. To accomplish this large feat, a team of experts devised a plan to transport the massive vessel on a special flatbed trailer, navigating many obstacles and tight turns along the way. This transport took several days and required meticulous planning, but with great efforts the Batfish arrived safely to its new home and remains here today as a popular attraction among history buffs and enthusiasts.

Much like the history of the Batfish, Muskogee is brimming with historic sites, scenes, and stories that will take you back in time. You’ll find a glimpse into the past through guided tours, exhibits, and immersive experiences in our museums. This specific site serves as a tribute to those who served during WWII and a testament to Muskogee’s commitment to preserving our country’s rich history.

Today, the Batfish stands proudly as a symbol of the nation’s military heritage, continuing to draw visitors from all over the country to explore the story of this legendary submarine and the incredible journey that brought it here to a small town in Oklahoma.
